A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is not really an infection. Yeast (Candida albicans) is a normal inhabitant of the vagina; however if it overgrows and overtakes the other healthy organisms in the vagina, you may have vaginal itching, whitish/cottage-cheese like discharge, redness, swelling or itching around the vulva, and pain or bruisin during intercourse. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. Vaginal Yeast Infection Pictures
